The pain of repeated betrayals and deep disappointments doesn't always make us scream; often, it makes us go silent and disconnect. Discover how our chest builds an invisible wall so we can keep functioning for those who need us.
You might know the feeling. When you no longer feel sharp pain, but rather a heavy, dull emptiness in your chest. Breathing becomes shallow, the shoulders slightly hunch forward to protect the center of the body. When trust is repeatedly and ruthlessly broken, the nervous system makes the only logical decision: it cuts off the emotional supply. We tell ourselves "I don't care anymore"—and this disconnection becomes our most perfect shield.
🖤 For those who had to freeze in order to stay on their feet
From the perspective of somatic alchemy, the chest and the heart center are the most vulnerable parts of our body. When we experience the trauma of rejection or cruel betrayal from someone we trusted, the body perceives it as a lethal physical attack. If this betrayal is repeated, if someone crosses the line and lies over and over again, the heart creates a fascial and muscular armor. The intercostal muscles stiffen, and we literally stop taking deep breaths. The body refuses to open up to life, because to open up means to risk a fatal wound once again.
We often remain in destructive situations or cold relationships not out of weakness, but out of necessity—for example, for the sake of the children, to preserve at least an illusion of stability for them until the time is right. This is when somatic disconnection steps in. We feel cold. We are functional, we can work, take care of the family, but we are emotionally distant. This apathy is not a flaw. It is anesthesia. It is the way your heart keeps you alive until you gather enough strength to make the final, definitive cut.
The heart's armor cannot be broken by force. It cannot be removed by ordering ourselves to trust again someone who doesn't deserve it. True release of the chest only comes with an absolute internal boundary. When you tell yourself: "One more wrong step, and it's over. No debate." The moment you make this decision and truly believe it, your sternum can relax by a millimeter. You no longer need a wall of ice, because your protection has become your own uncompromising sovereignty.
You don't have to force yourself to feel love where only ashes remain. Allow your chest to protect you, but don't forget to breathe for yourself inside that dark fortress. Your disconnection from others must not mean a disconnection from your own soul. ⚖️
