Its twelve “moons” map exactly onto the tropical zodiac boundaries — the snow goose is Capricorn, the otter Aquarius, the cougar Pisces. It is Hellenistic astrology with the animals swapped. The Traditional Elders Circle condemned it in 1980, the 1984 AIM resolution from Window Rock names Sun Bear personally, and the 1993 Lakota Declaration was adopted unanimously by representatives of more than forty groups. We do not do it not because we could not — but because we would be lying, and lying at someone else’s expense.

Graves himself called his method “analeptic thought” — casting the mind back in time. To arrive at thirteen months he rewrote an old poem and cut fifteen consonants to thirteen. The Celticist R. A. Blum invented his own rune order and added a blank rune which he himself admitted on page 28 was never part of the futhark. There is no Viking zodiac. The sixteen “chertogs” with animal totems and patron deities is a 1990s construction. Its author was convicted in Russia of inciting hatred and the movement declared extremist.
