The Six Profile Lines

A line is one sixth of a gate — 0.9375°. The same six recur twice: once in the profile, where they say how you step out among people, and again in every single activation, where they say how you live that particular theme. Which is why they are worth knowing before anything else.

1 — Investigator

The first line must study a thing first. Until the ground is solid it will not move — and when it moves, it knows why. This is the one in a group who knows the source material better than anyone. Its shadow is study that never turns into a step.

2 — Hermit

The second line knows something it never learned, and so does not value it — to it, it is obvious. It needs time alone or it runs empty. And it needs to be called by someone outside, because it will not offer itself. Its shadow is hiding even when the call comes.

3 — Martyr

The third line learns by collision. It tries, it fails, and that is exactly how it finds what works — it holds knowledge no book can give. Those around sometimes read it as chaos. Its shadow is taking every failure as personal defeat rather than as the result of an experiment.

4 — Opportunist

The fourth line lives on its network. Opportunities do not arrive through advertisements but through acquaintances — which makes loyalty and keeping in touch a literally existential matter. Its shadow is clinging to the old until the new is certain.

5 — Heretic

The fifth line attracts projections: people see a rescuer in it before they know it. When it helps it is a hero; when it does not, it falls hard, because it falls from someone else’s image. Its shadow is promising more than can be carried, just to keep that image intact.

6 — Role Model

The sixth line has a life in three parts. Until about thirty it lives like a third line — trying and colliding. Then for some twenty years it steps back and observes. And after fifty it returns as the one who is trusted, because it lived through all of it. Its shadow is impatience during that middle, quiet stretch.
